Friday evening and I am all set for Delhi Milonga at Lounge & Bar, Eros, Nehru Place.
What exactly is a Milonga?
A milonga is a social event or location for tango dancing. More simply, milongas are tango dance parties. People who dance at milongas are known as milongueros. When a group of people go tango dancing, they go to a milonga.
How is Milonga different from the regular tango?
Milonga refers to a distinct style of tango. Although milonga uses the same basic elements as tango, it tends to be faster-paced and less complex. Milonga tends to place greater emphasis on the rhythm of the music.
Basic knowledge of Milonga
A DJ will usually play 3 or 4 songs of the same orchestra or style followed by a one minute cortina. This “set” is called a tanda. It is only when we want to stop dancing with our partner that we say “thank you”. Do not make the mistake of saying “thank you” after every tango.
My experience at Milonga
Having a basic knowledge of jazz and salsa, I was actually looking forward to Delhi Milonga. The steps were quiet simple but when you have to coordinate them with a partner it becomes quiet tricky. First we learnt the walk, my younger brother was accompanying me and he didn’t mind me stepping on his foot (:p).
A tip- do not wear 5” pencil heels while attending a milonga, mainly for two reasons,
1). The floor is generally wooden and you could easily slip ( I almost did :p)
2). You could easily pierce your partners feet with the 5” heel ( :p)
I then got the opportunity of learning one to one with Eduardo. He taught me few poses of Milonga and it was so much of fun. All in all an evening spent well, would be coming back soon to do some more tango!
