People might say that whisky can be enjoyed only with friends. I on the other hand am a firm believer that Single Malt Scotch Whisky is best enjoyed at its origin, in Scotland. We take a trip down the famous Glenmorangie distillery.

How to get to the Glenmorangie distillery?

The Glenmorangie distillery is located in the Highlands region of Scotland. More specifically it is located in the town of Tain in Ross Shire which is near the southern shore Dornoch Firth. You have to take a tram from Inverness which is about ah hour’s ride. The town of Tain is steeped in history and the absence of city sounds is like a blessing on the ears. You can find some beautiful architecture in the form of Churches and the Royal Hotel.

The men of Tain are known as the makers of the whisky and have progressed from the original 16 to 22 now, including quite a few females. Dr Bill Lumsden came down to India a few days back to extoll upon the beauty of the Highland tastes.

The Heritage Tour of Glenmorangie distillery

The whisky tour is quite unusual as it takes you to the source of the whisky, the water. In this case, it is that of the Tarlogie springs. It is pretty surprising how people under estimate the importance of water in whisky. But a few drops, even a splash of it can unleash flavours that you never thought possible.

Another important part of the tour is the Still House (also known as Highland Cathedral). It has huge copper stills the necks of which extends into the ceiling. They are said to be as tall as the neck of an full grown giraffe and that is the reason behind Geoffrey, the bull Giraffe becoming a mascot for the brand. These long necked stills ensure that none of the oily vapours ever ascend into the whisky, thus making for crisp, subtle flavours.

The tour also includes a trip to the Highland home where lunch is served along with the tasting of the best whiskies of the distillery. The Classic Original had notes of citrus fruits in the palate but I fell in love with the Signet with its notes of caramel, chocolate and cinnamon. It is almost like having dessert in the form of whisky.
