If the first Mad max movie which released way back in 1979 was Mad, then Mad max fury road is Mad at its maximum best. While the protagonist remains the same, the characters around him change, and so does the whole Post apocalypse World.
Max played slightly unconvincingly by Tom hardy is a man of less words and more action, but is seen haunted by the death of his wife and daughter. Max is caught by the War boys and is designated as a Universal blood donor. He is used as a blood bag to give blood to the sick Nux, played with aplomb by Nicholas hoult. If in the first movie Toe cutter was Mad max’s nemesis, the same actor plays the role of menacing Immortan, the man who rules Citadel along with other cults.
The story line might be a thin one but what Director George miller manages to create in this 2 hour dessert journey is nothing short of a pure adrenaline pumping joy ride. Mad max escapes the captivity of Nux in a fight, and joins the 5 wives escaping Citadel and Furiosa played wonderfully by Charlize theron in a journey in the mighty War rig to go towards the Green place, which is her home. The conflict between them and the lack of trust adds to the tension.
They are chased by Immortan joe, bullet farmer, the people eater, Rictus erectus and others in their dextrously designed monstrous metal cars and trucks like the plymouth car, the falcon etc. The best part is the continous background music provided by the hanging guitarist and flame thrower, Doof warrior. It leads to excellently choreographed action sequences with some brilliant cinematography and editing. Lot of interesting concepts like the chrome spray that the War boys spray on their mouth happily before sacrificing themselves in hope of a berth in Valhalla or a place like Heaven, have been incorporated which one should see to believe.
Rosie huntington whitely plays The splendid, and one of the 5 wives, who are the center of the conflict as they are the key to Joe’s legacy going forward. The good thing is that the Women are not just damsel in distress but take part in the action. There is the humane element too, and the somewhat unnecessary emotions which we are seeing in more and more Hollywood movies these days whoch reminds us of our very own Hindi films.
The film does slow for a tad bit in the middle but it helps you to brace up for the engaging climax. Do make time for this movie.
If action is not your thing then take out your steering like they do in this movie and steer clear.
