I am a potato and this is my life story. I was born in West Bengal, a state known for its fertile lands. Unlike the ordinary brothers of mine I have always been protected. Protected by the scientists at PepsiCo. No I am not strong because I am a test tube baby. I am strong because my childhood was properly nourished. My father, a small farmer in the peaceful hamlet of Shabolda in Birbhoom district is very intelligent. His collaboration with PepsiCo meant I had been provided the correct vaccination against late blight, a disease that killed a lot of friends from the across my farm last year. The brand new mini tuber facility at Punjab helps make us potatoes strong and sturdy.

Did you know that PepsiCo is doing collaborative farming with 24,000 farmers all across the country helping them with seeds, agrarian techniques, fertilisers and loans to tide over crisis

I am all grown up now and it is time for me to see the world. I am plucked out of my comfortable soil and thrown into the cold outside air. But it’s the nourishment that I had received during my stay that has made me stronger. The use of organic fertilizers by the scientists at PepsiCo increased my solids content and also my durability. This increased solid content translates to better, crisper chips.  I am transported carefully to my cold storage where I met my brothers from ask over the country. I have left many of my friends behind who got crushed during the transportation process or will rot in the inadequate cold storage.

The PepsiCo cold storage is one of the largest in the country helping save tons of high quality potatoes

Transported to my factory in Dhulagarh, West Bengal I arrive at my final destination to become a chip. This multi award winning plant has a family of workers who will carefully oversee my transition into a potato chip. I am first washed to remove all the impurities from the soil and storage. A peeler peels off my skin as I get launched into an inspection area. The seamless integration of humans and machines is the reason behind the taste of the Lays chips. A few of my bigger brothers are cut down into smaller pieces while the few of those who got injured and bruised during the transport are left out. The slicer comes next as we are sliced into millimeter perfect thickness. A final wash is done before I go into the fryer.

Did you know that the Kolkata plant renews 85% of it’s energy thus making it one of the most green factories in the country.

The overcooked, the under cooked and the deformed are separated from the best as an Optical Scanner does it’s job. Carried into the next room, we are mixed with your favourite flavours of seasonings before being packed in the plastic bags that you open to a fresh pack of Lays Chips. Use of modern machinery, an extremely It’s time for me to go now. Do open a pack of Lays, eat me and tell us your favourite flavour of Lays Chips?
