Bureaucratic red tape has meant that that the capital was always short of a night life with many discotheques shutting all over. This has led to a new concept altogether where restaurants switch roles to dim lighting and groovy music. A perfect way to cater to the partying generation of today. But, once in a while you want to sit in a place where you can actually have a conversation and ponder. Ponder over the complexities of life. Vintage 31 located in the Meherchand Market is one of those rare places.
Owned by KD Singh and Vimi Singh who play perfect hosts in this quaint little café. Spread over three floors, the café is brought to life with quirky pieces of furniture by Vimi herself. KD is the man behind the kitchens. An ex-serviceman, his food is representative of him with clean cut flavours that express itself. A place which has been thoroughly appreciated by Ms Mariam Reshi and Dr Pushpesh Pant, they are doing well to stay away from the rat race and build up a truly loyal customer base.
The chicken olive kebabs are a revelation with a perfectly baked chicken breast wrapped around an olive along with a dash of basil sauce on it. The grilled basa with mustard impresses with the pungency of mustard shining through, almost akin to Kashundi of us Bengalis. But the star of the Brunch definitely was the Pork Chops. Perfectly grilled, the accompaniment of caramelised onions and bell peppers are something that will leave a mark on your palate.
We end the afternoon with a Tiramisu and KD’s favourite Caramel Custard. The perfect amount of nuttiness of the egg and the sweetness of the caramel make this one of the better yet simpler desserts going around town.
Check into Vintage 31 to chit-chat, relax and let go of the pretentious stuff. A long conversation over coffee or some grub is the perfect way to spend your time here. Do check out the terrace for a romantic evening, you lovebirds.
