I am a Bengali without too many exceptions. So, a restaurant which is pure vegetarian, unless it is for chaats/idlis/dosas or Gujarati thali and the likes would barely be on my list. Not that I do not eat or appreciate vegetarian, but imagining a new age pure vegetarian restaurant in posh Lower Parel was difficult. But The Rolling Pin broke stereotypes. They have revamped their menu, to top it off.
We started with a blended drink. The passion fruit ice tea was a molecular surprise. Fuming at first look, yet the first sip was chilled. Then we had their charcoal bao which was filled with minced soyabean. For a non-vegetarian, it would be hard to differentiate the taste. The colonel fries were a welcome improvisation on our regular fries. It was loaded with caramelized onions, jalapenos, Parmesan and sriracha sauce – it was good beyond belief. Then there was the red rice risotto (mushroom, spinach and red rice in a vegetable broth’ – this one should be listed under “10 dishes breaking myths that healthy food cannot taste good.” Yum, is all I can say.
We had the ferrero rocher freak shake, which truly freaked us out with it’s volume and presentation. While all of the above was very good, what took my breath is their cookie in a cup. You can’t believe until you taste it. A soft crunchy upper layer of a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie filled with bursting chocolate underneath, topped with a scoop of plain and simple vanilla ice cream. Every bite would take you to utopia and back.
To add to all the good food and desserts, the decor was relaxing, fun, smart and chilled with a fully open kitchen. Simple yet tasteful. Service could be smoother, I am sure they are working on it.
