The Bengalis have always been compared to the French when compared to their love for the fine arts and gastronomy. Even when Hollywood movies are dubbed into Hindi, the French is always converted to Bengali. With New Town becoming the new weekend for Kolkatans, the Novotel is at a prime spot for enjoying your weekend away. With bits and pieces of French architecture built into hotel which ostensibly comes under Accor Hotels, a French brand. This majestic hotel has lots of sunshine coming in through the large windows on the ground floor. The cascading pool outside adds an extra dollop of charm. The chic modern ambience at the hotel is something that you will soothe you completely. The Square is the 24 hour workhorse of Novotel serving out a buffet along with an a la carte menu.
The buffet is set out in a very attractive way drawing attention to a lot of flavours as you move from salads to starters to main courses and end up with desserts. We start with a few salads before moving to heavier, bigger meals. As a Bengali, we totally fell in love with the Spicy Squid Salad with mushrooms with a citrusy dressing on top. The Yam Kai Yang epitomises the best of Thai flavours with sweet, sour and spice hitting your palate. The tenderloin with broccoli combines the best of vegetarian and non-vegetarian flavours to give you the best of both worlds. The flaky texture of the baked fish plays a complement to the crunchy flavours of the Bell peppers.
The buffet has been set out surreptitiously keeping in mind the vegetarian sensibilities of the customers. But that does not mean that they don’t turn up in the non-vegetarian section. The buffet also has a small counter which houses traditional Bengali delicacies, one being vegetarian and the other non-vegetarian. Being one of the rare cities that still hasn’t banned Beef, Executive Sous Chef Neelabh Sahay goes all out in terms of his pizza which are topped with tons of meat on them. The CF 11 is every non-vegetarian’s dream. With Spanish smoked Bacon, Pepperoni, Chicken & Pork sausage, ham and minced lamb. here are a plethora of flavours and textures on offer. The New Town pizza on the other hand offers a topping of Indian chicken tikka with the tanginess of jalapenos countered beautifully with a slight tinge of sweetness from the slow roasted garlic and onion.
The Square at Novotel Kolkata is your one stop destination for a plethora of food options next time you are in the New Town area.
