The first quarter of the year draws to a close and it has been an Italian extravaganza already. From Italian PDO cheeses to Shangri-La‘s newest wonder kid, Sorrento, the list goes on. The most refreshing part has been the strict adhesion to authenticity as far as the culinary creations have been concerned.
Sorrento is a throwback to the coastal areas of Italy with a stunning yet casual decor. Designed by the Dubai based Stickman Design, the warm yet casual interiors lighten up your hearts with small square tables dominating the space. The restaurant turns into a elegant fine dine in the evening with the manicured lawns outside being a perfect place of alfresco dining. With Executive Chef Neeraj Tyagi and Chef Luigi Ferraro at the helm, this Italian masterpiece will definitely impress the palate of the Dilliwallahs. As Chef Neeraj Tyagi says” We have tried to bring out the Neapolitan style of Italian cooking at Sorrento. The food we are cooking will be dominated by tomatoes and softer Buffalo milk cheeses. To preserve the essence of these areas, most of the ingredients are being exported from the coastal regions of Italy.”
Food and beverage Director Suveer Sodhi drags me off to the only Italian Bar in the city, Grappa where he is doing a series of aged Negroni and also a section on Gin and Tonics. We plan for a future story on his prediction of how Gin and Tonic will dominate the coming year as we sit down to sample some of the Chef’s finest with a Piccini 2012 Chianti on the side.
We start off with a Neapolitan pizza with a perfectly thin, soft crust and a in house tomato sauce with a load of Salami picanti, red onions and mozzarella. Salad is a classic tomato and mozzarella along with a load of rocket to give it the zing along with dashes of extra virgin olive oil. But it’s their artesan pastas that you’ll totally fall in love with. Try out the Agnolotti stuffed with farmed rabbit and slow cooked pork or the Fogotini stuffed with ricotta.
The mains include a sweet Black Cod with some nuts and roasted mushrooms. The mushroom risotto is probably one of the best ones that you might get in Delhi NCR with the creaminess of mushrooms combining with the perfect chalkiness of the rice. Finish off the Italian casual dine with a Mount Vesuvius. An explosion of flavours as Hazelnut chocolate cremeux, cocoa soil explode in combination with a tangy raspberry sauce.
This coming year, solve all your Italian cravings at Sorrento at the Shangri-La‘s Eros hotel.
