North Eastern food has been a favourite of mine, mostly because of the pork dishes available in their cuisine. So when Crowne Plaza Today Gurugram hosted Hoihnu Hauzel to cook them a decadent menu, we headed on there to experience the flavours. The festival, which is on till the 31st of March not only features food from the seven sisters and one brother but also products from the North-East, both culinary and otherwise which you wouldn’t be able to find that easily in our markets.
To start off, I dig into the stalls available in the courtyard as they serve up some traditional starters and grill items. There’s some Chicken Momos which taste quite good with the spicy red chutney to accompany them. The Thupka, a traditional soup from the state of Sikkim also Bhutan is available with a variety of things that you can put in it, including Prawns, Fish, Chicken, Mushrooms among others. But the dish that caught my eye, or rather my tongue was the Dohnelong, Pork cooked with Black Sesame seeds and served with a portion of rice.
For the sit down dinner, we start off with a lovely pea soup known as Ooty before moving onto Thevo Chu which is pieces of Pork cooked with Garlic and Ginger before moving onto the mains. There’s the potato mash(Ironba) along with a Mizo Bai which is a quintessential dish from Mizoram made with drumstick and an Assamese fish curry cooked with tomatoes. We finally end with a Manipuri Black Rice Kheer and Tel Pitha to round off an eventful evening. The North Eastern festival is a part of the regular menu that you should definitely try out soon.
