My decision to head off to Kolkata had only one very specific agenda: I wanted to experience Kolkata Famous Food. The first order of business was to book my Go Indigo flight tickets and search through the hotels in Kolkata for the perfect place to base my operations from.
Where to find sweets: Kolkata Famous Food
The first and foremost thing on my mind was to devour as many of the sweets as possible. I headed over to Balaram Mullick and Sons where I was going to satisfy my cravings. Here I picked up my favorite Nolen Gurer Rosogulla before picking off a plethora of Sandesh that I was going to satisfy my hunger pangs of Kolkata Famous Food. I decided to head off to Park Street after that to two of my favourite joints: Peter Cat and Olypub. Peter Cat is known for its Chelo Kebabs which consists of Sheekh Kebabs served with rice, butter and a fried egg on top. Olypub, on the other hand, serves a delicious steak to its regulars.
Kathi Rolls: Another of Kolkata Famous Food
A trip to the city of Joy cannot be complete without trying out the Egg Roll. A better version of the Kathi Rolls we find all over India, the Kolkata Egg Roll stands apart due to the crispy parantha and the lack of sauces that tends to dull down the flavors. What we tend to go for is the use of onions and lime to give a sharp, tangy flavors with the egg and meat. Another street food that holds its own in Kolkata are the phuchkaas. Similar to the Gol Gappas in Delhi, the Phuchkaas are slightly bigger in size and have only a tangy, spicy flavor. I prefer these to the ones in Delhi just as all Bengalis do.
Tangda Chinese
Chinese food in India first came through Kolkata as the Chinatown had set camp here. Known as Tangda Chinese, the Tibetans dominated the flavor proceedings and a plethora of shops selling Chinese food opened up all over Kolkata. As my first memories of Chinese food were in similar tasting restaurant Daitchi, I headed off to Kimli in Gariahat to find this Kolkata famous food. I decided to end my ministrations with a meal at Bhojohori Manna with a scrumptious feast of Bengali food. I chose upon some Dab Chingri, Dak Bungalow Chicken and Kosha Mangsho along with some Luchis to finish off my culinary trip to Kolkata.
