6 types of protein and another could not be eaten because it was still getting cooked. It’s really rare that a non-vegetarian gets a treat this good. But the cuisine is what draws you in even more. It’s the spicy, tangy flavours of Kerala. Located behind the DLF place Saket Mall, Mahabelly is the hard work of two brothers to bring Malayali cuisine to the forefront in North India. Born out of a sheer lack of places serving out the beauty that Malabari food is, Mahabelly brings to you a range of non-vegetarian delicacies that will not find easily. The restaurant brings together snapshots from Kerala along with a ‘Mala Bar’ which dishes out some delicious cocktails.
We start off with some delectable starters. A fish cutlet which tastes exactly like the ones you find in the streets of Kolkata. A mixture of ground fish along with garlic and onion. There’s also a tangy Gobhi 65 which retain the original spicy flavours. The Double Erachi Fry (INR 320) impresses with the beef being fried in a beautiful batter. But it’s the specials of the weekend that blow us away. The spicy Pork Vindaloo, the Masala squid so reminiscent of the coasts from Konkan to Malabar. We pair these with a Thenqa Kollada (INR 349). A cocktail of rum and sweet coconut water served in a tender coconut shell.
Off we move to a selection of delectable mains. We combine a fluffy Appam with the traditional creamy Vegetable stew(INR 270) and a Green Mango Prawns curry. The green mango prawn curry is the explosion of spices along with a hint of tanginess beautifully enveloped in creamy coconut milk. The Shaapu Meen Curry (INR 350) is a fish in tangy tamarind curry reminiscent of the typical sourness of the Imly.
We finished off with a Payasam (INR 150) and Sweet Dosais. The Payasam was inoculated with jaggery and the broken texture of rice had been substituted with sheets of gelatinised rice and oats. The sweet dosa is sprinkled with a banana sauce on top which gives it a beautiful flavour. This we pair with a Idi Vellu Filter Coffee (INR 349). A mix of Filter coffee and Bailey’s Irish cream.
Mahabelly is your one stop solution to trying out some authentic Malabari food.
