Well, winter times are right at the doorstep and it is the perfect encase for a Bengali like me to dig into some Biryani. This magical combination may have enthralled millions all over the world, but it definitely holds a special place in our hearts and definitely our tummies. We have always been big fans of calling for home delivery of Biryani, for every special occasion. One of our favourite brands, ITC Hotels have recently launched the ‘Biryani & Pulao Collection’. A unique collection of rice delicacies from around the country, ITC Hotels stays true to its brand statement of reviving and promoting traditional Indian flavours.
What can you order?
There are 10 different Biryani & Pulao ranging from the subtle Serai ki Biryani to the explosive Koneseema Kodhi Pulai, from the east (Metiabruz Gosht Biryani) to the West (the Bohri Gosht Biryani) and even encompassing some interesting vegetarian options: the Kale Moti Pulao & Nimona Mirch Pulao, both priced at INR 625. Although I have been a part of numerous Biryani festivals over the years, what impressed me the most with this collection is the unique pairing with raitas. There is an Onion Pichadi, a Baingan Mirchi Salan, a zesty Sarson ka Raita, and even a unique Pomegranate Raita.
Just before we dig into how the Biryani taste like, I’d like to go over the exceptionally unique packaging accompanying it. With the We Assure program, the food is delivered across to you in a safe hygienic way. Each Biryani is a single serve and is served along with a Raita of your choice and even a sweet tooth to boost, one of ITC’s famous Gulab Jamuns. The wooden cutlery served along with the package is a perfect addition.
Let’s get to the Biryanis now. The Bohri Gosht Biryani (INR 825) is something that I have craved for quite some time since the first time I had tasted it in Mumbai. Made with some succulent mutton along with a lot of dry fruits including cashews and prunes, there are also some fried baby potatoes that give it an interesting, sweet flavour. The Serai ki Biryani (INR 825) is a throwback to the Mughal era, when the armies used to rest by the Serai or rest houses along the Grand Trunk Road. Now this Biryani is quite along the lines of the original Persian version, subtle with a hint of lemon and onions. Paired up with the zesty Sarson Raita, this was probably my favourite combination of the night.
Although the Metiabruz Biryani had been recommended quite a bit but my sister was dead set against trying out this Kolkata-delicacy served with an egg and potato, so we ventured onto the Koniseema Kodi Pulao (INR 750), a spicy Chicken Pulao made in a traditional Andhra style. The suggested pairing was to have it with an Onion Pichadi but we chose to try it out with the Salan, replete with a strong flavour from the curry leaves.
