The Fatty Bao, the Asian Gastropub just launched its #BaoWow festival and its Bao Wow. The Bao or baozi as it is known in China is a type of steamed, filled, bun or bread-like item filled with meat or vegetarian fillings. It’s origins can be traced to 3rd century A.D when Chinese scholar Zhuge Liang probably first came up with the idea.
We bring you the five Baos that you should be trying out the BaoWow festival:
- Chilli Crab & Prawn Bao– a spicy crab cake with Asian slaw, pickled watermelon rind and fried garlic. The sweet taste of the crab with the chilli tantalizes your palate.
- Teriyaki Glazed Chicken Bao filled with pan seared chicken, pickled cucumber and shichimi. The crunch of the cucumber beautifully offsets the sweet, sour chicken.
- Roast Duck Bao with hoisin sauce, cucumber and scallion. Duck is one of the most difficult meats to tenderize but Chef Manu Chandra does it to a perfection with the crunch of the cucumber and sweetness of hoisin sauce.
- Fried Eggplant Bao marinated in miso with kimchi cabbage and a drizzle of Sriracha sauce. “Begun Bhaaja” for a bong. Are you kidding me? The thinly sliced Eggplant in the most newest avatar possible.
- Char Siu Bao made with imported BBQ Pork Belly, BBQ Sauce, green apple kimchi, sesame Oil and scallions. It is one of the original ones from the menu and still continues to rule the roost.
This Valentine’s Day, treat your special one with some Baos Bae
