Delhi is high on food, and the hoards of crowds descending at the food festivals proves it!
The recently concluded ‘The Grub Fest’ was a treat for all food lovers and non-food lovers alike. Despite the rain spoilt first day and the cancelled musical performances, the second and third day of the fest saw some great crowd, food and performances.
The Grub Fest was organized at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium Lawns on April 3, 4, and 5, 2015. The venue had free parking inside as well as valet services available. The entry was by very nominally-priced tickets and the process was pretty smooth.
The lawns at the venue looked very beautiful with quirky and interesting decoration pieces like a piece made with a pretty pink bicycle and a few milkcans, one made of some cool looking bell peppers, and another with some colourful pans and lunchboxes. These were great to get clicked with.
The highlight of this festival was that there were food trucks, restaurants and food product retailers, all at the same venue, showcasing their products and brand as well as doing decent business. For the aamjanta, such great variety of food was available at one single place, in a sort of food court (called Café Epicuria) format, where people could taste so much variety, get to know about new brands, and try out food they had never tried, or could never find company to try with, at the restaurant.
There was a market place, called Grub Market, at one end of the lawns, where people could buy bakery products, organic food, etc. Imagine finding cupcakes, honey, pickles, aampapad, etc., at one place!
The festival saw a lot of big brands come together with newer, lesser known ones. It was a party for the food enthusiasts. We tried a good mix of food from big and small restaurants. Lamb and Bacon burger at Smokey’s was a treat. The Mini Platter at GhaasPhoos was a delight for vegetarians. There was a whole corner with kebabs and grills, where we found the juiciest and tastiest kebabs. We saw Sushi being made in front of our eyes. It makes a very interesting sight. We tried opening Fortune Cookies at Asian Haus. There was no dearth of desserts with ice cream, bakes and fancier desserts, all available at the venue. From Indian Street food to coastal food to Oriental and food from the West, it was an out of the world experience.
For non-foodies, there was a Kids Zone where one could just leave the kids and chill. Beer and cocktails were also available. Live performance by Vir Das had people in splits, laughing holding their stomach and gasping for air. There were live presentations by various well-known people from the Culinary Industry. Chef Vicky Ratnani gave some great cooking tips, Celebrity Chef Sherine John was seen mixing some exotic cocktails, and Chef DhruvOberoi interacted with the crowd at Grub Theatre.
Though there were minor glitches and the weather tried to play a spoilsport, the crowd really enjoyed The Grub Festival. An encore is all that is required.
