Well, if your favourite cuisine is Chinese and you reside in Delhi, you would surely know where you get the best Peking Ducks. Yes, I am talking about The China Kitchen at Hyatt Regency, New Delhi. For those of you who may be unfamiliar, this is the singular specialty which brings scores of food lovers to Hyatt Regency pretty often. The country’s leading Chinese restaurant prides itself on these unputdownable Peking ducks. Chinese cuisine is now accepted widely in India, no matter whether you like China as a country or not. Go to any restaurant, and you will find a few, if not many Chinese items, because people have developed a taste for the cuisine. But the Chinese offings in China Kitchen are absolutely close to perfection. Every dish is so beautifully prepared, be it the Dim Sum or “Teem Saam” or the sweet dessert, all are equally demanding.
When we recently visited the restaurant, on the occasion of The China Kitchen completing 10 august years, dimsums again set the floor on fire. The dimsums here are one thing here to die for. The neatly stuffed varieties melt your mouth with every bite you intake. The green mushroom dumplings also tasted toothsome. The Peking duck is served before the main course sets in. The duck is usually served with pancakes and sauce, rolled together. Since the duck is almost unsalted, sprinkling salt is needed or you can even dip it in sauce to match flavour. Experts say that the best Peking duck in Delhi is this, with distinct layers of fat.
For the main course, as we have mentioned in our previous blog, the traditional Mapu Tofu or the ‘Mapo Doufu’ is the next bang. It is a popular Chinese dish from Sichuan province. The Wikipedia description reads like this: “It consists of tofu set in a spicy sauce, typically a thin, oily, and bright red suspension, based on douban 豆板 (fermented broadbean and chili paste) and douchi 豆豉 (fermented black beans), along with minced meat, usually pork or beef. Variations exist with other ingredients such as water chestnuts, onions, other vegetables, or wood ear fungus.”
The staple in the main course is Fried Rice with Sichuan fried noodles. Besides this, they also have one of the finest collection of wines. Their open kitchen is always alluring which incorporates five sections, namely the Peking duck station, the dumpling and noodle station, the steamer, the wok and the dessert kitchen. And we are not done yet. Let me be honest. The dessert in The China Kitchen left me wonder-struck. The brownie points go to the majestic cigar rolls filled with yummy chocolate. Egg tarts and sweet rolls were no less appetizing, to end this foodie ride.
The fact that they have successfully revolved around the Sun for 10 long years, shows they ensured 100% consistency and hard work. Chinese food with Chinese chef seems to have done the trick. The China Kitchen has an unique possession. It has six Chinese chefs (All Expats), all of whom are a master in their signature specialties. Depicting traditional elements of a Chinese house, the restaurant is surrounded by double-glazed glass on all sides. For authentic oriental Chinese cuisine in Delhi and to explore Mainland China in India, the foot needs to walk the floors of The China Kitchen at Hyatt Regency. Be it the crockery, furniture, juicy peanuts or airy ambience, there is something very Chinese.
