Although the world seems to have shortened in size with all the wanderlust all around, we decide to bring about some of the rarest places to visit on Earth. This post will have places which do not have a ton of tourist traffic throughout the year, either due to difficulty in reaching or because of the unexplored beauty of the place. However, please do note that these places have had a tourist or two as we aren’t the explorers of yore. So read on and tell us about what to add to the list.
5. Roros, Norway
Located in the South-Western part of Norway in Sor-Trondelag county, Røros was famous for Copper mining in the mid 17th century. It has since been preserved that way. It is one of rare destinations that have historically been designated at “Mining Towns” along with the Silver Town of Kongsberg.
Walking into Røros is like descending back into the medieval ages as the time stands frozen. The small town is like a living museum with it’s authentic wooden buildings still protected.
How to get there?
Røros is pretty well connected by trains and flights from Oslo. The driving time down to this beautiful place is about 5 hours. The copper town of Røros is brought to life with the Smelthytta Museum built on the ruins of old smelters. The old mining facilities give you an excellent insight into the economy that fed this town. The mines are the next place to visit. The hour long guided tour takes you through the Nyberget and Olav’s mine. It’s like descending into the bowels of the Earth for an experience of a lifetime.
4. Elsinore, Denmark
I am a sucker for medieval age castles and Europe is the perfect place to find them. Located in the town of Helsingor, the Kronborg castle made Denmark a super power of the Baltic Sea and is one of the rare destinations in the Nordic country. Along with the fortress at Helsingborg, it allowed the Danish king control over the entrance to the Baltic Sea. This castle is also the place where Shakespeare set his famous drama Hamlet in. He called the castle Elsinore which is now the English name for the town it is located in. The castle is now one of UNESCO’s heritage sites.
3. Eberbach Monastery, Germany
There is a sense of going back in history as we strolled through the timeless Roman arches of the monastery. The Cistercians had a very simple lifestyle and it is evident from the strong wooden arches with bare furnishings. The church is central to the workings of a monastery and the Roman architecture will make you fall in love with its simplicity. The dining hall of the lay brothers is where all the action used to take place. The wooden wine presses of the 17-19th century are still visible. Although the monks were known for their austerity, but the Baroque period saw the monks showcasing their worldly wealth. The Baroque residence was one of the most elegantly decorated rooms in all of medieval Europe. The richly decorated ceiling literally takes your breath away.
2. Barli, India
There is not a single second of boredom at the Barli, one of the rare destinations to travel to in India. Activities like the bullock cart ride around the village is one of the good options. You can also troop around the sleepy hamlet of Barli on your own discovering the simplicity of village life. Many authentic Indian penchants like Astrology, Palm Reading and Henna application are also available. Now most of you would have traveled the world and tried out the Balinese, Swedish and Ayurvedic massage. How about a traditional Indian massage more prevalent in the Northern part of the country? A deep tissue massage which also involves vigorous rubbing to produce heat on the surface, this massage is something that you should definitely try. A massage worth royalty, it is perfect for all those sore limbs aching from all the travel.
1. Antartica, one of the rare destinations of the world
Our final destination is probably the most mind blowing and we are travelling from the hot deserts of Rajasthan to the icy glaciers of Antartica. This white blanket of Snow has always been one of the most difficult regions of the earth to reach and is one of the rarest of rare destinations. But Oceanwide Expeditions is making this possible and is definitely going to allow one of my dreams to come true: See the penguins. The purity of the white expanse of snow combined with the lovely fauna consisting of Emperor Penguins, Killer Whales and many others.

The cruises will start off from Ushuaia in Argentina which is the Southernmost city in the world and then move to the South Shetland islands where you can see the first icebergs. The cruise then moves inwards to the continent where you can set foot on the austere landscape along with activities like Kayaking, Scuba Diving and exploring the different types of Penguins.
