Themed restaurants are the in thing in today’s world but only a few embody it in totality. I discovered such a restaurant in the overcrowded market of Sector-29 Gurgaon. When the market at Sector-29 Gurgaon had started off, it had made for one of the revolutionary places in the food scene of Delhi NCR. But with the startling amount of restaurants coming up, the locality resembled chaos. The food want making much effort either and I lost interest. But recently I was at an event in Gurgaon when my blogger friend Pawan Soni pulled me aside and persuaded me to go over to his newly opened restaurant, Prankster.

College days at Prankster

Although my social media timeline had been filled with people singing praises for the place, I still had to check it out on my own. Although I have seen quite a few themed restaurants in my life, nothing actually matches upto this. They have literally taken the concept of an Indian college setup to the most authentic way possible. The library houses chairs on both side of a long table while the chemistry lab does the same with high chairs for those looking to get tipsy. But my favourite places include the dorm room with double bunker beds, the amphitheater with the multi level seating and the parking lot which provides for an outdoor seating. We take our meal in the classroom which provides for seating closest to the regular restaurant seating.

What we ate at Prankster?

Chef Harangad Singh’s food is a tribute to throwback tastes of a North Indian childhood. The North Indian Sambhar paired with Dosa crisps is flavourful of the Sambhar masala, although it has been recreated in the kitchen. The Dosa crisps make for a healthy bar bubbles that goes down perfect with mugs of beer. Vada Pav and Pav Bhaji were two of my favourites from college (I did my undergraduate from Solapur). The Pav Bhaji zinger combines both the flavours and combines the textures too. There is some Maharashtrian Shenga (peanut) chutney on top along with a green chili to give that added burst of flavours. I was also introduced to a new version of egg curry. An omelette is pan fried in tempura batter and cooked in a curry of the yolk and Miso sauce. There are some new textures although the flavours remain authentic and refined. The Tender Tandoori Lamb Chops will give you one of the most tender, fall of the bone lamb chops that you’ll ever try.

We end off with a Rose Kheer that combines the traditional kheer with gulkand along with a topping of dry fruits. A Nitro frozen Rose is broken on top from some additional drama. Prankster will make you come back for flavours that stay true to its origin. The ambiance truly helps too.
